I do not know how to
describe Vespa’s resistance so long in the history. Locally, Vespa is one of
the oldest brands survived even there are so many option with enhanced
technology. Actually, Vespa means wasp in Italian. Perhaps, it is because of the
scooter’s design like an insect. The uniqueness was made it came world renowned scooter.
The Vespa has evolved
from a single model scooter, manufactured in 1946 by Piaggio & Co. S.p.A. from Pontedera , Italy. Today, the brand
just concentrates the production of various scooters types under the Piaggio hat.
As we noted before, the classic
Vespa was so popular once upon a time. It disappeared for a moment because of the
costs to maintain the vintage scooter is relatively high. The main issue was it
quite hard to find the spare parts. However, since the emergence of vintage lovers
and collectors of classic items, Vespa has regained its popularity.
I grew and have
wonderful memories with Vespa. I was took ride with beloved grandfather during my
childhood. The icon its own character, unique body design and for sure the
sound is different to other motorcycles.
I can still imagine that
time some rich peoples proud with their 'remos' hair style rode the bike along the
streets. The popularity of the Italian -made scooter also portrayed in the late
Tan Sri P. Ramlee film.
After going through
various challenges in the industry, Vespa rose in the market in 1997. The story
is contrasting with German’s Lambretta or Bella. Now,
Vespa is enjoying the manifestation in modern shape. Vespa’s
potential in the Malaysian market was quickly get response from subsidiary of
the Naza Group - Naza Premira.
At the first glance, LX150
model still retains its classical identity. I just regret myself because I just
did my hair cut, if not, of course I could enjoy my ride with Joe Jambul style.
Although the LX150 is
built in modern times, it still maintains the traditional look, inspired by the
classic Vespa. The round shape headlight and side mirrors strengthening the
classic sentimental aura. It is part of the marketing strategy; they know there
were some fanatics with the Vespa classic design.
While most of modern
motorcycles use plastic material to the body, Vespa still retain the use of
iron throughout the body. Several body parts are chromed and it does highlight
the exclusivity features to the scooter.
The classic Vespa used
two-stroke engines. Due to the environmental awareness, the new engine has been
mated to the new LX150. It was powered by 149.5cc four-stroke engine. The single
cylinder engine has figured 9.7kW and maximum torque of 11.5Nm at 6000rpm.
When the throttle is
twisted, I can feel the engine power is transferred well to the automatic
transmission. Even there is a little bit vibration at the early acceleration, I
quite enjoying the speed. In the busy area, it is not difficult to control even
the size of the scooter quite wide.
The panel meter is
simple and understandable. I saw the fuel indicator showed it needs to be
filled. Then I lifted the seat and fill
the fuel to the 8.5 litres petrol tank.
Riding along Federal
Highway motorcyclist narrow road, it is not a big problem to handle with holes
and ‘racing’ with the crazy motorcyclist hurrying back to home. The smaller
tyre - 110/70 at the front and 120/70 at the back, gave LX150 quick response
from the handlebar controlling. Front 110/70 tyres is matched with 11 inches light
alloy wheels measuring while at the back, the 120/70 tyre wrapped 10 inches
alloy wheels. It has pretty comfortable riding position even more it is
supported with a wide seat. Although occasionally bumping into the holes, my
butt does not feel the impacts too much.
I am very exciting the LX150
ride, especially regarding the ergonomics, the designs, acceleration and the
performance and as well as the brand name itself.
The handling is very easy
and well-suited quickly to the user. The price tag of RM10, 988.15 per unit
fairly exclusive, however, it is still worth because of – it is Vespa!
