The All-New Toyota Vios

The Toyota Vios, Malaysia’s best-selling model in the non-national segment, enters its third generation this month. To date, close to 265,000 units of the first and second generation have been sold nationwide since launched in 2003 and it has been among the most popular models sold in Malaysia since in its segment.
Developed with the concept of ‘Value Beyond Belief’, the new third generation continues with the same attributes that made its predecessors so popular among Malaysians: excellent fuel economy, low cost of maintenance, Toyota’s renowned Quality, Durability and Reliability, and most important of all, great value for money. As with every new model, the design team relied on feedback from customers to understand their expectations and needs. At the same time, the aim was also to provide a new generation of the Vios which would give a greater sense of pride to owners with a fresh new design and enhanced features to make it a class leader.
One of the reasons for the popularity and success of the Vios in Malaysia has been the wide choice of variants to suit the needs & preferences of buyers. The new generation continues to offer the same wide choice of five variants:

Vios 1.5 TRD Sportivo with automatic transmission; RM 93,200.00
Vios 1.5G with automatic transmission; RM 88,500.00
Vios 1.5E  with automatic transmission; RM 82,900.00
Vios 1.5J with automatic transmission; RM77,300.00
Vios 1.5J manual transmission; RM73,200.00

EXTERIOR DESIGN

For the all-new Vios, Toyota’s ‘Keen Look’ expression was adopted for the front design. This gives a more expressive style with a dynamic look, achieved by having more sculptured 3-dimensional design.

The dynamic appearance starts at the front where the ‘face’ of the Vios has a distinctive trapezoidal front grille which creates the impression of ‘projecting forward’. The chrome accented bars of the grille extend across the front, giving a wide look which is flanked by headlamps that wrap deep into each side of the car.
The headlamps for the all-new Vios have a very distinctive and sharp appearance with a classy form that is rare in this class of cars. The 1.5 TRD Sportivo Vios and 1.5G come with a projector-type headlamp which gives the impression of a single piece of metal piercing through from the side to the front.
The roof also has a catamaran shape, evoking the flow of air across its surface. The catamaran shape is also functional as it helps to streamline the airflow over the top of the car, benefitting acceleration and fuel economy.
All variants now come with 15-inch lightweight alloy rims as standard. The Vios 1.5 TRD Sportivo have a sporty & dynamic design, and Vios 1.5G wheels have an elegant design while the Vios 1.5E and Vios 1.5J have sophisticated design which gives the impression of a larger wheel.

The all-new Vios is available with choices of five exterior colours – Quartz Brown Metallic, Medium Silver Metallic, Silver Metallic, Attitude Black and White. Of these, Quartz Brown Metallic is a brand new colour which has been specially developed for the all-new Vios.
The suspension layout consists of independent L-arm MacPherson struts in front (a stabilizer bar is also installed) and a torsion beam rear suspension at the rear. The result is a more linear feel in the steering, better stability at high speeds, reduced body roll and improved comfort. The Electric Power Steering (EPS) system has been revised to realise a lightweight compact system.

The cabin of the all-new Vios has been completely redesigned to provide a more impressive and luxurious feel that owners will feel is beyond its class.

Space for the occupants has been improved in the all-new Vios with increased headroom, shoulder room and hip room. Legroom at the rear has been increased by 75 mm while knee room is 44 mm greater.
The redesigned dashboard has a centre console which is more three-dimensional in appearance, appearing to ‘float’ above the dashboard. There are two versions of the integrated audio system installed, depending on the variant.
For the Vios 1.5 TRD Sportivo, 1.5G and 1.5E, the integrated audio unit has a uniquely-shaped front panel and piano black ornamentation for a natural design and sense of unity with the instrument panel.
The trim surrounding the centre console is finished in Piano Black which is a classy lustrous black with a fine dimple grain.
Also contributing to the classy appearance of the cabin is the stitched design (made possible using world-leading Japanese moulding precision technology) for the instrument panel, door trim and steering wheel.
The upholstery and colour theme varies according to the variants. For the Vios 1.5 TRD Sportivo, there is a combination black leather with red trim while the Vios 1.5G has combination leather in darker ivory. The Vios 1.5E comes with fabric in two shades (grey and black) while the Vios 1.5 J has black fabric.

A Smart Entry System & Push Start Button, usually found in more expensive and bigger models, is now available in the Vios 1.5 TRD Sportivo and Vios 1.5G, providing convenience for the driver.

The Vios TRD Sportivo continues to be the top of the range and is equipped for a sporty image which will appeal to younger buyers. Externally, it has a smoke-coloured extension on the headlamp housing and a sporty bodykit developed by TRD. The 5-piece aerokit comes with a front bumper spoiler extension that includes LED day-running lights, a rear bumper extension, side skirts and a bootlid spoiler.

Other items include sports front seats, a leather-wrapped steering wheel with red stitching and audio switches, sports analogue meters with white lighting for the MID which also has a drive monitor, and TRD embossed scuff plates on the front door sills. Exclusive TRD Sportivo floor mats are also provided.
The all-new Vios uses the familiar 1NZ-FE 1.5-litre 4-cylinder all-aluminium DOHC 16-valve engine with electronic fuel-injection (EFI). It features VVT-i (Variable Valve Timing with intelligence) technology enhances performance, fuel efficiency while having cleaner exhaust emissions.

As the engine has proven to be very reliable and durable, the focus was on improving its fuel efficiency and this has been achieved mainly through reducing the overall weight of the powertrain. One of the ways was through redesigning the air cleaner housing and related parts. Likewise, for both the 4-speed automatic and 5-speed manual transmissions, various components were redesigned to be lighter or more compact, reducing their weight.
The reduced weight of the powertrain, together with the lighter vehicle weight and a more aerodynamically efficient shape, has made it possible for a 5% improvement in fuel economy compared to the second generation of the Vios. This will certainly be appreciated at a time as fuel prices continue to rise in coming years. However, even though the all-new Vios is more economical to run, the performance characteristics have not been compromised with maximum power output of 80 kW (109 ps) at 6,000 rpm and maximum torque of 141 Nm at 4,200 rpm.

The all-new Vios is equipped with a comprehensive security system that meets the UK Thatcham-1 security standard, the highest for vehicle security systems.  The system consists of an engine immobiliser, tilt sensor (to prevent unauthorized towing), hyper-frequency sensor (to detect cabin intrusion) and a back-up battery for the siren.

Customers who wish to personalize their new Vios can also include optional accessories at the time of purchase. The advantage of including these accessories in the purchase price is that their cost is part of the hire-purchase loan whereas purchasing accessories separately for fitting after purchase will usually have to be paid in full to the shop.

Three accessories are available - a DVD-AVN and DVD-AVX system with reverse camera, an elegant aerokit with daytime running lights and a choice of window tints. The DVD-AVN system has a 2-DIN head unit incorporating a DVD Player and a 7-inch touchscreen. Besides the radio receiver and MP3 capability, connectivity options are via an AUX jack, USB and SD card slots as well as Bluetooth. The system also comes with a smartphone Link and Voice Recognition as well as GPS route navigation. As for the DVD-AVX system, this is similar to the DVD-AVN system but has a 5.8-inch touchscreen. Both systems include a reverse camera which gives a clear view of the rear of the car during reversing.
